Vijan is the third collaboration project between St. Croix roots sensation, Midnite, and I Grade Records. As a much anticipated follow up to the first two collaborations ( Nemozian Rasta and Assini) Vijan blazes a unique fire combination of word, sound and powa. The musical approach to Vijan is refreshingly undefinable with its creative arrangements and mystical sound quality. Yet most of the songs on Vijan retain a solid roots foundation with crushing bass lines and crisp rhythm sections. Midnite's lead singer Vaughn Benjamin approaches each song with his incomparable creativity and lyrical dexterity, destroying all limitations in his unrelenting exploration of truth. Destined to be listened to over and over, the lyrical content on Vijan provides ample food for the brain and spirit. Alongside producers Vaughn Benjamin and Laurent "Tippy" Alfred are a number of talented musicians, including Midnite drummer Dion "Bosie" Hopkins, legendary guitarist Tuff Lion, and bassist Kenyatta Itola. The songs on Vijan capture a full range of moods and messages, from the mystically melodic acoustic songs "Days Come" and "Blackson Rays" to the heavyweight nyabinghi tune "Structa" to the more traditional roots tunes, "See Blah Sum" and "Thank the Lord." Vijan also includes some soulful blending of genres on the songs, "Scornful", "Far I" and "Cradle of Joy." This groundbreaking album captures the beautiful diversity of St. Croix's growing roots reggae tradition. |
